Save the Date: Europe’s space-based lightning detector!

Europe's Lightning Imager and its first animations will be revealed on Monday, July the 3rd from 14:00 to 15:00 CEST.

Will give weather forecasters greater confidence in their predictions of severe storms

The first-ever satellite instrument designed to continuously detect lightning over Europe and Africa has been switched on and is producing extraordinary data.

The data from the Lightning Imager onboard MTG-I1 will give weather forecasters greater confidence in their predictions of severe storms by observing the abrupt changes in lightning activity that often precede them. This will be of significant benefit to aviation safety and could help forecasters more quickly warn of the likelihood of flash flooding, for example. Data from the instrument is expected to become available to weather services throughout Europe and beyond for use in their forecasts from early 2024.
