It is every day more frequent to hear that Space Industry will occupy a central place inside the economy of the future. More than one important player in the financial world of today sustains that the flow of money is turning: "Space travel is expected to become a trillion dollar industry by 2040".

Quite immediately everyone's thought flies to the three top players in the sector: Branson's Virgin Galactic, Bezos' Blue Origin and Musk's SpaceX, with the note that only the first one is a public company, at least for the moment.

With this issue of the SpaceInfo newsletter, we are going to start a new series of articles under the theme of Space Economy, how the industry is projected into the Future and how the world of Economics and Finance is approaching the Space Sector.

Behind the three big players mentioned above, there is indeed a widespread set of hard-working, steadily growing engineering, materials and satellite-focused businesses which will be guiding the whole sector in the upcoming years.

In particular, we can gather companies into three main categories on the basis of the role that they have inside the Space environment:

  • Electronic Technology (50%)

  • Communications (25%)

  • Technology Services (25%)

Can you already imagine which and how new categories will be introduced in the Future?

Maybe you have noticed that Space Transportation and Space Tourism haven't appeared, yet: the most visionary and futuristic ones are already figuring them out.

However, let's stick to the reality, at least for the moment.

Taking the same companies categorized as above, they can be re-assigned as different slices of the same pie, but giving a more detailed idea of how the processes, technology and in general the industry is brought from Earth to Space. The following macro-industries can be identified:

  • Telecommunications equipment (10%)

  • Packaged Software (15%)

  • Specialty Communications (15%)

  • Aerospace and Defense (40%)

  • Electronic production equipment (5%)

  • Wireless telecommunication (5%)

  • IT services (5%)

  • Other: minor industries and private R&D (5%)

Note: military and governmental applications, have not been taken into consideration as they have different purposes, economical and political dynamics which are not reflected on the private sector.
