October 30, 2025 — In a move set to reshape the landscape of satellite intelligence and on-orbit data processing, Leonardo S.p.A., a global leader in aerospace, defense, and security, has announced a strategic cooperation with Unibap Space Solutions AB, a Swedish company specializing in space-based computing. The partnership aims to pioneer the next generation of real-time space intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities.
A Leap Toward Autonomous Space Intelligence
Under the new agreement, Leonardo and Unibap will collaborate on a joint technical study centered on integrating Unibap’s high-performance edge computing technology into Leonardo’s upcoming Earth observation space infrastructures. The initiative will also define a shared development roadmap that leverages Leonardo’s mission experience and Unibap’s advanced computing solutions to meet the most demanding space and defense requirements.
Leonardo is currently investing in a next-generation Earth Observation (EO) constellation, designed to deliver near-instant, high-resolution radar and optical data from low-Earth orbit. The system will employ powerful onboard processors and high-speed inter-satellite communication links, enabling data pre-processing directly in orbit. This approach will drastically reduce the time between data capture and ground-based analysis — a transformative advantage for both civilian and defense applications where every second counts.
Unibap’s Edge Computing: Powering Smarter Satellites
Unibap’s contribution centers on its proven in-orbit edge computing platforms, including the iX5 and iX10 systems, which allow satellites to autonomously process large volumes of data in real time. By minimizing reliance on ground stations for data analysis, Unibap’s technology improves operational efficiency, reduces latency, and enhances mission autonomy. The company expects more than 30 of its computing units to be operational in orbit by 2025.
“Unibap’s dual-use strategy, bridging commercial and defense applications, thrives on partnerships with established leaders in aerospace and security,” said Johan Åman, CEO of Unibap Space Solutions. “High-performance edge computing, driven by AI and advanced hardware, must respond to the tactical needs of operators in the field. Leonardo’s expertise makes them an ideal partner in our mission to become a trusted defense technology provider.”
Strengthening Europe’s Space Intelligence Capabilities
The cooperation aligns with Leonardo’s broader vision for Europe’s role in autonomous space systems. “By combining Unibap’s innovative edge technology with Leonardo’s deep experience in space systems and services — together with Telespazio and Thales Alenia Space — we are opening a new chapter in Europe’s ability to deliver real-time intelligence from orbit,” said Massimo Claudio Comparini, Managing Director of Leonardo’s Space Division. “Leonardo’s upcoming Earth observation constellation will serve as a cornerstone for this effort, driving value for institutional and commercial customers worldwide.”
A Shared Vision for Innovation in Space
Both companies emphasize that innovation and collaboration are key to advancing space technology that serves global needs — from environmental monitoring and disaster response to national security and defense readiness.
With this partnership, Leonardo and Unibap are positioning Europe at the forefront of real-time, AI-enabled space intelligence, underscoring a future where satellites do not merely observe the Earth but think, analyze, and respond while still in orbit.
